History
Formed in 1738 from Orange County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Frederick County was created from Orange County on December 15, 1738, but was not fully organized until 1743. The county was named after Frederick, Prince of Wales. Frederick County lost territory over time, including to the creation of Hampshire, Berkeley, Dunmore (now Shenandoah), Clarke, and Warren counties, as well as multiple transfers to the independent city of Winchester between 1902 and 1971.
