History

Formed in 1754 from Augusta County and Frederick County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hampshire County was created by Virginia in 1754 from Augusta and Frederick Counties. In 1863, Hampshire County separated from Virginia and became a county in the state of West Virginia. The county's boundaries changed several times, losing land to the creation of Hardy County in 1786, Morgan County in 1820, and Mineral County in 1866.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
