History

Founded in 1607

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Richmond was founded in 1607. On July 10, 1902, Richmond became an independent city, 1st class, separated from Henrico. The city expanded through several boundary adjustments: it absorbed Manchester in 1910 and gained territory from Henrico and Chesterfield in 1914, 1942, and 1970.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
