An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Halifax County was created from Lunenburg County in 1752. In 1767, Pittsylvania County was formed from Halifax County. South Boston, initially established as an independent city in 1960, reverted to town status in 1995 and was eliminated as an independent city, with all of its territory returning to Halifax County.
