History

Formed in 1800 from Russell County and Wythe County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Tazewell County was created on May 1, 1800, from Russell and Wythe counties and named after Henry Tazewell. Over the following decades, the county's boundaries shifted repeatedly through territorial losses and gains involving neighboring Virginia and West Virginia counties including Giles, Logan, Mercer, McDowell, and Buchanan.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
