History

Formed in 1793 from Wythe County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Grayson County was created from Wythe County in 1793 and named after William Grayson. The county's boundaries changed several times: it gained territory from Wythe County in 1794 and from Patrick County in 1810, but lost land to Wythe County in 1825 and to the creation of Carroll County in 1842. Galax became an independent city in 1953, separating from Grayson County.
