History

Formed in 1786 from Washington County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Russell County was created from Washington County in 1786 and named after William Russell. Over the following decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Lee County in 1793, Tazewell County in 1800, Scott County in 1814, Wise County in 1856, Buchanan County in 1858, and Dickenson County in 1880.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
