History

Formed in 1790 from Montgomery County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Wythe County was created from Montgomery in 1790 and named after George Wythe. Over its first century, the county lost territory to the creation of Grayson (1793), Tazewell (1800), Giles (1808), Smyth (1832), Pulaski (1839), and Bland (1861), though it gained some territory back from Grayson in 1825.
