History

Founded in 1663

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Accomack County was created from Northampton County in 1663. In 1879, the county gained a small portion of the southern end of Smith's Island from Somerset County, Maryland, when the United States approved the Maryland-Virginia boundary as settled by arbitration in 1877.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
