History

Founded in 1634

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Henrico was created in 1634 as one of the original eight shires and named after Henricus. The county lost territory over the centuries as Goochland was created in 1728, Chesterfield in 1749, and the independent city of Richmond was formed beginning in 1902.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
