History

Formed in 1786 from Hampshire County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hardy County was created by Virginia from Hampshire County in 1786. The county lost territory to Hampshire in 1787, and again to the creation of Pendleton County in 1788. When West Virginia separated from Virginia in 1863, Hardy became a county in the new state. Hardy lost additional territory to the creation of Grant County in 1866.
