History

Formed in 1776 from Fincastle County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Montgomery County was created from Fincastle County in 1776, and was exchanged with Washington County in 1777. Over the following decades, the county lost territory to the creation of several new counties, including Greenbrier, Kanawha, Giles, Floyd, and Pulaski, and gained territory from Botetourt and Pulaski through various exchanges and transfers.
