History

Formed in 1851 from Botetourt County, Giles County, Monroe County and Roanoke County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Craig County was created from Botetourt, Giles, Monroe (W. Va.), and Roanoke counties. The county was named after Robert Craig. Over the following years, Craig County gained territory from Monroe, Montgomery, and Alleghany counties, and made small boundary adjustments with Giles County.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries.
