History

Formed in 1763 from Anson County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Mecklenburg County was created from Anson County on February 1, 1763, with an indefinite western boundary. Over the following decades, the county lost territory to the creation of Tryon County in 1769 and Cabarrus County in 1792, with further adjustments to Cabarrus in 1794 and 1804. In 1813, Mecklenburg lost a small area to South Carolina following a boundary adjustment between the two states, and in 1842 it lost additional territory to the creation of Union County.
