History

Formed in 1822 from Escambia County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Jackson County was created by the Florida Territory on August 12, 1822, from Escambia County. The county's boundaries shifted frequently in its early years: in 1823 it lost territory to Duval County and to the new Gadsden County, and in 1824 it gained from Escambia but lost to Walton County. Over the following decades, Jackson County exchanged territory with Washington County, lost land to the creation of Calhoun County in 1838 and 1845, and temporarily gained the extinct Fayette County.
