History
Formed in 1853 from Marion County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
When Sumter County was established in 1853 from Marion County, it was larger than it is today. Over the following decades, the county lost area to the creation of Lake County in 1887 and to transfers to Polk, Orange, and Hillsborough counties, while gaining some land from Polk and Hillsborough.
