An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lafayette County was named after Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette. The county exchanged land with Taylor County multiple times between 1858 and 1921, and lost territory to the creation of Dixie County in 1921.
