History

Formed in 1844 from Alachua County, Hillsborough County, Mosquito County, Orange County and St. Johns County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Marion County was created from Alachua, Hillsborough, Mosquito (now Orange), and St. Johns on March 14, 1844. The county's boundaries shifted multiple times: Marion lost territory to Orange and St. Johns in 1846, to St. Johns again in 1848, and to Sumter in 1853. In 1877, Marion lost land to Levy, and in 1887 exchanged territory with Putnam. In 1973, Marion gained part of Alachua County when Lake Orange was drained.
