History

Founded in 1858

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Originally called New River when created from Columbia County in 1859, it was renamed Bradford in December 1861. The county gained territory from Alachua County in 1870 and exchanged small areas with Alachua along the Santa Fe River in 1954, while losing land to the creation of Baker County in 1861, Union County in 1921, and Putnam County in 1927.
