History

Formed in 1822 from St. Johns County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Duval County was created on August 12, 1822, from St. Johns County by the Florida Territory. The county gained and lost territory over its first decades through boundary adjustments and the creation of neighboring counties including Alachua, Leon, Nassau, and Clay.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
