History

Formed in 1843 from Alachua County and Hillsborough County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hernando County was created by the Florida Territory on February 24, 1843, from Alachua and Hillsborough counties. The county was renamed Benton in 1844, then renamed back to Hernando in 1850. Between 1880 and 1887, Hernando County gained territory from Polk County and lost territory to the creation of Citrus and Pasco counties.
