History
Formed in 1832 from Gadsden County and Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Franklin County was created by Florida Territory on February 8, 1832, from Gadsden and Washington counties. In 1838, the county lost territory to the creation of Calhoun and Washington counties. Boundary adjustments with neighboring counties occurred repeatedly: in 1851 with Wakulla and Gadsden along the Ochlockonee River, in 1885 with Liberty, in 1972 when it gained Forbes Island from Gulf County, and in 1986 when Wakulla shifted the boundary to the middle of the Ochlockonee River and Bay.
