History
Formed in 1837 from Giles County and Tazewell County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Mercer County was created by Virginia on March 17, 1837, from Giles and Tazewell counties and named after Hugh Mercer. It lost territory to Giles County in 1841 and to the newly created Summers County in 1871. When Virginia separated in 1863, Mercer County became part of the new state of West Virginia.
