History

Formed in 1789 from Greenbrier County and Montgomery County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Kanawha County was created by Virginia on October 1, 1789, from Greenbrier and Montgomery counties. Over the following decades, the county lost territory through the creation of Wood, Mason, Cabell, Nicholas, and Logan counties, as well as through exchanges and adjustments. On June 20, 1863, Kanawha County separated from Virginia and became part of the new state of West Virginia.
