History
Formed in 1799 from Wilkes County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ashe County was created from Wilkes County in 1799 and lost territory to Burke County in 1814. The county experienced significant boundary changes over the following decades, including the creation of Watauga County in 1849 and Alleghany County in 1859 from Ashe territory, with various small adjustments made to accommodate local property owners through the 1880s.
