History

Formed in 1853 from Los Angeles County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

San Bernardino County was formed in 1853 and was named after San Bernardino. The county gained and lost territory through multiple boundary changes: it gained from San Diego in 1873, lost part of its territory to the creation of Riverside County in 1893, gained from Kern in 1917, and exchanged areas with Riverside in 1919. A boundary dispute with Inyo County, dating from 1947, was resolved in 1957 when San Bernardino County gained a small area from Inyo.
