History

Formed in 1851 from Yuba County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Nevada County was created from Yuba County on April 25, 1851, and named after Nevada City. The county gained territory from Sierra County in 1852 and again in 1856. In 1908, the California Supreme Court settled a boundary dispute between Nevada County and Sierra County in favor of Sierra County over the location of the source of the South Fork of Middle Yuba River.
