History
Formed in 1873 from San Luis Obispo County and Santa Barbara County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Ventura County was created from San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara on 1 January 1873, under an act passed 22 March 1872. In July 1881, it gained territory from Los Angeles County following an official boundary survey. The county lost territory to Kern County in 1919 when boundaries were adjusted to run on public land survey lines, with additional small areas lost to Kern in 1986 and 1991.
