History

Formed in 1852 from Mariposa County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Tulare County was named after Tulare Lake and bulrush plants native to the area. The county lost territory to the creation of Fresno in 1856, Inyo in 1866, and Kern in 1866, and gained territory from Kern in 1873, with several boundary exchanges with Fresno in 1874 and 1876.
