History

Founded in 1850

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Tuolumne County was created on February 18, 1850 from non-county area. The county lost territory to the creation of Stanislaus County in 1854, to the creation of Fresno County in 1856, and to the creation of Alpine County in 1864, though it gained back territory from Fresno County in 1859.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
