History

Formed in 1851 from Sutter County and Yuba County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Placer County was created on April 25, 1851, from parts of Sutter and Yuba counties. The county was named after placer mining, the surface mining technique used in the area. Over the following decades, Placer exchanged and adjusted its borders with El Dorado and Sutter counties, with the most recent boundary change in 1913.
