History
Formed in 1856 from Butte County, Colusi County, Colusa County and Shasta County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Tehama County was created on April 9, 1856, from Butte, Colusi (now Colusa), and Shasta counties. Within weeks of its creation, Tehama exchanged territory with Shasta on April 21, 1856, and again on February 19, 1857, when it also lost land to Colusi (now Colusa). Over the following decades, Tehama made additional boundary adjustments, gaining from Colusa and losing to Butte in 1859, losing more to Colusa in 1873, and exchanging with Butte again in 1944.
