History
Founded in 1850
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
San Joaquin was created from non-county area on February 18, 1850. In 1852, it gained territory from Contra Costa County, but in 1860 it lost territory to Stanislaus County. Territory was lost to Sacramento County in 1861 and then regained from Sacramento County in 1878.
