History

Formed in 1853 from Trinity County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Humboldt County was created from Trinity County on May 12, 1853. The county lost territory to Mendocino County in 1859, then gained some back in 1860. In 1874, Humboldt County gained the former territory of Klamath County after it was eliminated. In 1901, Humboldt County exchanged small areas with Del Norte County and lost a small area to Siskiyou County.
