History
Formed in 1850 from Trinity County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Shasta County was created in 1850 from non-county area, with Trinity County initially attached to it for judicial purposes. Trinity County became fully organized and detached from Shasta in 1851. Shasta County lost territory to the creation of Siskiyou County in 1852 and Tehama County in 1856, and later to Lassen County in 1864 and 1899. The county is named after Mount Shasta.
