History

Founded in 1850

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Santa Clara County was created from non-county area and named after Mission Santa Clara de Asís. In 1853, it gained a small remnant from Contra Costa County as Alameda County was created from its territory.

Boundary changes from the Newberry Library, Atlas of Historical County Boundaries; the 5 that matter most are shown first.
