History

Founded in 1861

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Washoe County was created by Nevada Territory from non-county area on November 25, 1861, and named after the Washo people. The county gained territory when Roop County was disorganized and attached to it in 1864 and then fully eliminated and merged into Washoe in 1883. Washoe exchanged boundaries with neighboring counties multiple times between 1924 and 1983 to align them with public land survey lines and highways.
