History
Formed in 1836 from Brown County and Milwaukee County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Washington County was created by Wisconsin Territory on December 7, 1836, from Brown and Milwaukee counties, but was not fully organized and remained attached to Milwaukee for judicial purposes. In 1840, Washington was organized for county purposes while still remaining attached to Milwaukee for judicial matters, and in 1845 it became fully organized and detached from Milwaukee. In 1853, the county lost territory when Ozaukee County was created from it.
