Dodge County was created by Wisconsin Territory on December 7, 1836, from Brown County and Milwaukee County, and initially overlapped the eastern part of Portage County until the dispute was settled on January 12, 1838. The county was organized for all purposes of government in 1840 and fully organized and detached from judicial oversight in 1844, becoming a county in the state of Wisconsin in 1848.
