History
Formed in 1851 from Brown County and Manitowoc County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Door County was created in 1851 from Brown and Manitowoc Counties but was not initially organized, remaining attached to Manitowoc for judicial purposes. In 1852, Door County lost territory to the creation of Kewaunee County, and in 1855 it was detached from Manitowoc and attached to Brown for judicial purposes. The county became fully organized and independent on January 1, 1861, when it detached from Brown. During the early twentieth century, a boundary dispute between Michigan and Wisconsin over islands in Green Bay affected Door County's territory until the U.S. Supreme Court resolved the dispute in Wisconsin's favor in 1926, with final adjustments made in 1936.
