History

Formed in 1854 from La Pointe County and Bayfield County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Douglas County was created from La Pointe (now Bayfield) on February 9, 1854, and initially attached to La Pointe for judicial purposes. The county was named after Stephen A. Douglas. Douglas was fully organized and detached from La Pointe on November 25, 1854, and subsequently exchanged territory with newly created Burnett County in 1856 and 1864.
