History
Formed in 1779 from Bute County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Warren County was created from Bute County, which is now extinct. The county was named after Joseph Warren. In 1787, Warren gained territory from Granville County, and in 1881, it lost territory to the creation of Vance County.
