History
Formed in 1779 from Tryon County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Lincoln County was created from the extinct Tryon County in 1779. The county gained territory from Burke County in 1782 and 1784, then lost land to the creation of Cleveland County in 1841 and Catawba County in 1843. In 1846, Lincoln County gained some territory from Catawba County while ceding land to the newly created Gaston County.
