History

Formed in 1760 from Bertie County, Chowan County and Northampton County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Hertford County was created from Bertie, Chowan, and Northampton Counties. The county was named after Francis Seymour-Conway, 1st Marquess of Hertford. In 1779, Hertford lost territory to the creation of Gates County.
