History
Formed in 1848 from Jackson County and Wood County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Wirt County was created by Virginia from Jackson and Wood counties. In 1853 Wirt lost land to Jackson, but in 1863 it separated from Virginia to become part of West Virginia. Between 1863 and 1872 the county gained territory from Wood and Roane counties.
