An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Mason County was created by Virginia from Kanawha County in 1804. The county exchanged territory with Kanawha in 1817 and ceded land to Jackson County in 1831 and to Putnam County in 1848. Mason County separated from Virginia to become part of West Virginia in 1863.
