History
Formed in 1836 from Kanawha County, Lewis County, Nicholas County and Randolph County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Braxton County was created by Virginia in 1836 from parts of Kanawha, Lewis, Nicholas, and Randolph counties. The county gained territory from Randolph County in 1849, then lost land to the creation of Clay County in 1858 and Webster County in 1860. In 1863, Braxton County separated from Virginia and became part of the new state of West Virginia.
