History
Formed in 1814 from Ohio County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Tyler County was created by Virginia in 1814 from Ohio County. In 1820, the Ohio River and its islands were declared part of adjacent Virginia counties, including Tyler. Tyler lost territory in 1846 to the creation of Wetzel County and again in 1851 to the creation of Pleasants County. When Virginia separated into two states in 1863, Tyler became part of West Virginia, and gained a small area from Wetzel County in 1868.
