History
Formed in 1789 from Washington County
An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.
Allegany County was created from Washington County in 1789. In 1872, Garrett County was formed from part of Allegany County; the boundary between the two counties was run too far west, making Garrett smaller than intended, but the original survey line became the legal boundary through long observance.
