History

Formed in 1883 from Summit County

An old deed may name a county that no longer exists, or a boundary that has since moved.

Garfield County was created from Summit County on February 10, 1883, and named after James A. Garfield. The county lost territory to the creation of Rio Blanco County in 1889 and to Routt County by 1930 when boundaries were shifted to public land survey lines.
